What is a background check?

The background check is an optional step that runs for two weeks during the final part of the Selection in progress phase in a release. It is performed by its <a href="https://welcometogate.com/faq/solution/11" target="_blank" >creator</a>, on the signed tracks (not on runner-ups). The background check is some peace of mind when it comes to signing a track from someone fully unknown. You, the creator, get to check whether the producers of a signed tracks were truthful about their identity, music originality, skills, or values. You might be wondering if this goes against our commitment to equal opportunities for all, but the opposite is true! It makes our commitment stronger because the background check is here to disqualify those who want to take advantage of anonymity by being untruthful. Note: The background check is not a reason to disqualify a track because of subjective or discriminative reasons. (For more on that please keep reading.) Steps for the creator: 1. Perform the background check on your signed tracks as soon as you receive our email. Once all your top tracks are marked as selected by you on the platform, a page will pop up asking whether you want to run a background check. If you confirm, you'll receive an email with the following information for each signed track: track title, bpm, key, length, artist name, first and last name, email address, opt. artist website, and track originality details. Use this info to quickly research each producer and track (ex. on Google). If you need clarification, email the producer. They’ve been told to watch their inbox. If you can’t reach them after several tries, <a href="https://welcometogate.com/contact-us" target="_blank" >contact us</a>. Reasons a track can be disqualified: if the producer lied about their actual identity or their <a href="https://development.welcometogate.com/faq/solution/20" target="_blank" >newbie/pro level</a> (if applicable to your release), if the track is not <a href="https://welcometogate.com/faq/solution/86" target="_blank" >100% original</a>, the track has already been released, or the producer has shown not to embody the values agreed to when registering on G=TE – quality, non-discrimination and respect. Producers are responsible for ensuring their tracks are original and meet G=TE’s guidelines. We don’t actively check for artificial intelligence usage or originality at upload. To support the process, we provide checklists and guidelines. Tracks found to be non-original or predominantly AI-generated may be removed, and any release cancelled. 2. Found something? Contact us with your evidence, and we will look into your request. We expect track disqualifications to be rare. Please do not use this to dismiss a track based on subjective or discriminatory reasons (for example: ‘I don’t like the label they released on last year,’ ‘they don’t have enough followers,’ or judgments based on age, gender, or background). 3. If your request for disqualification is approved – You can sign another track and run a background check on it. The two-week background check window won’t be extended though, so the new check must be completed within the same period. 4. If your request for disqualification is not approved / You found nothing problematic – there is nothing else for you to do. Simply wait for these 2 weeks to end. Or end the background check yourself, in the tracklist view of your release. Time-sensitive: Miss the two-week window and your signed tracks will be automatically marked as final selections in your release, and announced publicly. Step for the submitting producer: Keep your eyes on your inbox (on your Spam folder too), especially during the Selection in progress phase. The creator might contact you. If you miss it, your track selection might get disqualified.
